World Trade Center

I stayed at the Millenium Hotel in lower Manhattan. The hotel is located immediately west of the World Trade Center site. My room had an excellent view looking across and down into the site which spurred my curiosity. The site has been in a constant state of recovery and reconstruction since 2001.

It took 20 months for the Millenium Hotel to reopen after the attack on the World Trade complex. They are still rebuilding at the World Trade site. The spire has been set on top of World Trade Tower 1 (formerly called Freedom Tower,1776 feet tall, highest in the western hemispere), and one bulding is open (World Trade 7), and there are two memorial fountains.

Jane's Carousel was built in 1922 and resided in Ohio. The deteriorated carousel was bought in 1984 and restored by hand by Jane Walentas. Years of paint were removed and the original colors were restored, patterns re-stenciled, and surfaces re-leafed. The carousel had a special building created for it in Brooklyn Bridge Park and it opened to the public in September 2011.

Battery Park City from the Hudson River. Battery Park City was created by filling in and extending the shore of the Hudson River using material from the World Trade site and other building projects.

"Tribute in Light" is a one day art installation using 88 search lights mounted to form two squares to suggest the twin towers of the World Trade center. They're located about 1/3 of a mile south of the World Trade Site.
